At Conscious Elegance we are committed to creating safe space and strongly believe that everyone has the right to marry, regardless of self-identity, gender expression or sexual preference. It’s so rare and beautiful when people find each other. We support love in its many forms among consenting adults and we welcome and respect clients of all kinds and all bodies. See our Inclusion Policy for details.
I’m a third-generation dressmaker and have been a seamstress for almost *cough* 30 years. When I was planning my wedding back in 2004 (still happily married!), there was lots of compromise but one thing I would not compromise was The Dress. That dress was mine, all mine. It was the only bit that would be completely my choice. And my choice was not only going to be gorgeous, but eco friendly and socially responsible. I was glad to support an indie artist and let someone else create my dress, but it was a real challenge to find a dressmaker who made conscious decisions about resources and didn’t use overseas factories. There had to be other brides out there who cared about the footprints they left and be the change they wished to see. I could help them!
Our business espouses Zero Waste Principles, both in fabrics and packaging. We exclusively use 100% certified organic cottons, pesticide-free hempsilk blends, and reclaimed materials in our designs. Our new fabric options are based on hemp blends to be kindest to the environment. We use certified organic cotton thread in all of our work (yup, it exists). Our garments are individually created in private studios, by fiber artists who are living their Dream.
Making a Stand
In 2006, I finally took the plunge and created Conscious Elegance when my beautiful friend K, who had been shopping in traditional wedding boutiques, was made to feel like she did not have the right to have a gorgeous wedding dress because of her shape. She cried on my shoulder for an hour. I resolved that together we’d create the most fabulous dress ever, just for her. The result was exactly what she wanted and her happiness informed my choice to offer this service to anyone and everyone. Although we’ve taken a public stand on our support for models of all types, I hadn’t until now spoken out on body-shaming issues out of respect for K’s privacy. With her permission, it is time to come forward. Our studio is a Safe Space and there will be no shaming of any kind; every body is beautiful and we pledge to work with our clients to help to create the dress of their dreams.
Our Ethical Pledge
The silk we use in our designs is either new hempsilk or reclaimed silk fabrics, repurposed from unwanted dresses which would have eventually ended up in a landfill. We believe that by giving pre-loved dresses a new life and extending their usefulness, we not only honor the initial sacrifice of the silkworms but we honor the laborers who wove the original fabric. We do this by reclaiming and re-using a resource that would otherwise be wasted.
